It has been a wile since I’ve made a new demo reel, early 2013 was the last one, and the one before that was in March of 2011. I figured it was about time to whip out a new one, especially as I will be graduating college shortly and will likely be asked to show some stuff.
Editing this one was more painless than the past few have been, as it felt like it came together much easier this time. In my theory this is due mostly to using better music. The hunt for good music is often in the back of my mind, the tricky part is finding something that sounds nice, fits the material, and is reasonable to work out the copyright stuff. After looking around I ended up buying a track from Premium Beat that I quite like. I think that it fits nicely.
This time around I wanted to use more of the original material rather than chopping it up for sake of time like in past reels. I decided to edit everything together in Premiere Pro as it talks to After Effects easier, I knew that I would likely be doing some speed ramps and AE would give me better control than. To keep the duration short and the pace interesting I ended up retiming some pieces. Sadly I don’t particularly care for how things look in Premiere when adjusting timing, so the work in Pr was used mostly as proof of concept. Interestingly, the retime effects didn’t translate into AE very smoothly but at least the edit came over.
In the future I want to make a process/breakdown video and some sort of video portfolio for previs and props/costumes. One more thing to add to the list.
