For a class assignment I get to make a mask of some sort. I decided to try Hiccups flight armor from How to Train Your Dragon 2. I started with the helmet. I wanted to do this freehand instead of from a pattern or pep files. Though I am not done yet, I’ve learned a lot. Mostly just how not to make a mask, but hey, that’s what these test are for. Here’s some progress so far…
I gathered lots of reference images from the movie to study the look and shape of Hiccup’s helmet. I started with a plastic mask I bought from a craft store as a base for the pattern. I marked out where the cutout for the eyes should go, and refined the shape to fit my face and eyes, then cut out the excess.
Next, came the pattern. I started with paper plates and scraps of paper taped to the mask get a rough shape. Once there was a basic framework, I filled in the rest of the gaps with more strips of paper to complete the rest of the helmet, making adjustments as necessary for sizing. The thing was ugly for sure, and certainly not ideal, but it gave a shape to start with.
From there, I pieced together a rough pattern from the paper and taped it together. It kinda worked, so I tidied it up and traced them onto some cheap craft foam, cut everything out, then taped it all together to get a temporary sense of shape and size. For the most part, it worked, I made a few adjustments to the.
I had purchased some faux leather on sale earlier. The foam had peel off adhesive on one side so it made attaching it to the fabric easy.
One thing that I didn’t take into account while building this one was the size change that would happen when adding the fake leather and attaching it all together. You’d think it wouldn’t make that big of a difference, it’d change some, but not that much lot. Go figure. Learned my lesson. I hope:)
For the sake of time I sadly had to call it quits in order to finish on time. Eventually I want to go back and finish the thing and add more detail, but for now it works I suppose.
