I recently had the wonderful opportunity to work with Lindsey Stirling to design some artwork to accompany a narration for part of her show. The project had a fairly quick turn around so the style consisted of elements that I stole from myself, basically for the sake of time and simplicity. Things don’t look as polished as I would have liked, yet given the short timeframe, I think things turned out pretty well.
Everything was animated and composited in Adobe After Effects CS6, using primarily Trapcode Form, a little bit of Mir, and a wee bit of basic modeling in Maya to get some quick abstract geometry for the water droplets and snowflakes. The snowflake images are from the the actual scientific study mentioned in the narration.
Another part of the show involved some storybook style animations. The goal was to make some kind of non-cheesy page peel to transition between the images for the story. Page peel animations are inherently cheesy, however it is possible to make them less so… For each image, I did some subtle 2.5D to give the stills some life, and added some slight drifting atmosphere to provide a little dynamics. This one was an even shorter turn around, a little more than 48 hours from the time I received the images and narration to delivery hour. A shout out and a thank you to a couple of friends: Brady and Tanner, whom I bribed with pizza to help me cut out the images and prep them for animation. Thanks guys!
